On Wednesday, July 22 at 7 p.m. the Grayslake Jazz Combo Workshop will perform a special concert in the Grayslake Heritage Center & Museum Courtyard. Enjoy Latin and modern jazz standards under the stars. 38 students from the 2015 Grayslake Jazz Combo Workshop will perform. Workshop participants have been learning about jazz scales and chords, starting and ending tunes, structuring good solos, and other skills needed for improvising.
Directors Tim Barclay, Bill Chapin and Paul Nielsen placed the students into five combos with piano, bass, drums, and horns and have been guiding each group through five rehearsals and a culminating concert. Now in its 15th summer, the workshop offers musicians entering grades 7 through adult the opportunity to develop skills in jazz improvisation. Students continue playing throughout the year at school and church events and at jam sessions held at the Chapin Jazz Studio on Center St., Grayslake.
